MediSave Claims for Wisdom Tooth Surgery in Singapore: Limits, Eligibility & Process (2026)

Direct Answer

MediSave applies to surgical wisdom tooth removal only — not simple extraction of a fully erupted tooth. The procedure must involve a gum incision, bone removal, or tooth sectioning and be classified under the MOH Table of Surgical Procedures (TOSP). For Singapore Citizens and PRs, withdrawal limits range from S$720 to S$2,740 per session depending on how many teeth are removed and whether tooth division is required, effective 1 April 2025.

The MediSave table that applies to your case cannot be confirmed without an OPG X-ray. At Dentalis, Tanjong Pagar, the TOSP classification and your exact out-of-pocket cost are confirmed in writing before any procedure is scheduled. Our complete wisdom tooth extraction guide for Singapore patients covers all impaction types, surgery, and recovery alongside MediSave context.

Eligibility

When Can MediSave Be Used for Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

MediSave eligibility is determined by the surgical classification of the procedure — not by symptoms, pain level, or patient preference. The critical distinction is whether the wisdom tooth requires surgical access to remove. Note that pain does not determine MediSave eligibility — a painful but fully erupted tooth may not qualify, while a painless but deeply impacted tooth may qualify for the highest table. For understanding why wisdom teeth cause pain and what pericoronitis involves, see our wisdom tooth pain and pericoronitis guide.

MediSave applies ✓

  • Wisdom tooth is impacted — partially or fully buried beneath gum or bone
  • Gum incision is required to access the tooth
  • Bone removal is needed to expose the tooth crown
  • Tooth must be divided (sectioned) into pieces for removal
  • Multiple wisdom teeth removed in one surgical session
  • Surgical consumables (sutures, irrigation) up to S$300 per session

MediSave does NOT apply ✗

  • Simple extraction of a fully erupted wisdom tooth with no bone involvement
  • Consultation and clinical assessment fees
  • OPG panoramic X-ray or CBCT imaging fees
  • Prescribed antibiotics and pain medication
  • Non-surgical dental procedures in the same visit
  • Post-operative review appointments

Important: MediSave eligibility is determined by whether the surgical procedure meets the MOH TOSP criteria — not by whether the tooth is painful. An asymptomatic fully buried wisdom tooth may qualify for Table 3A (the highest single-tooth limit) if it requires bone removal and tooth division to extract. A painful wisdom tooth that erupts fully and can be removed as a simple extraction does not qualify at all. Only an OPG X-ray and clinical assessment can determine which applies.

Your Specific Case

How Is the MediSave Table Determined for Your Case?

The TOSP table that applies to your wisdom tooth surgery is determined by two clinical factors — confirmed only after an OPG X-ray and clinical examination. A phone estimate is not possible.

Factor 1 — Number of teeth treated in one session

Tables 1B, 2C, and 3A apply to one tooth per surgical session. Tables 3B–3C apply to two or three teeth. Tables 4A–4B apply to four teeth. Treating more teeth in one session moves the applicable table upward, increasing the MediSave limit proportionally.

Factor 2 — Whether tooth division is required

Within each session-size group, the higher table applies when the tooth must be divided into sections during removal — a technique used when the tooth cannot be safely extracted in one piece due to root shape, depth, or angle. Bone removal alone (no division) attracts the lower table. Bone removal plus tooth division attracts the higher table.

Table 3A — completely buried tooth

Table 3A is a specific classification for a single tooth that is completely buried within the jawbone — the most complex single-tooth scenario. It applies regardless of the number of sections the tooth is divided into, and carries the highest single-tooth MediSave limit of S$1,690 total.

In practice at Dentalis: Dr Jonathan Liu confirms the TOSP classification at your first consultation after reviewing the OPG X-ray. The classification, the resulting MediSave entitlement, and the cash top-up (if any) are set out in a written estimate before any procedure is booked. You leave the consultation knowing exactly what you will pay — before committing to surgery.

Using Another Account

Can I Use a Family Member's MediSave?

Yes. MediSave can be used from an immediate family member's account with their consent. The patient undergoing surgery does not need to be a Singapore Citizen or PR — only the MediSave account holder must be.

Account Holder Eligible? Condition
YourselfYesMust be Singapore Citizen or PR
SpouseYesMust be Singapore Citizen or PR · consent required
ChildrenYesMust be Singapore Citizen or PR · consent required
ParentsYesMust be Singapore Citizen or PR · consent required
GrandparentsYesMust be Singapore Citizen or PR · consent required
SiblingsYesMust be Singapore Citizen or PR · consent required
Foreign national patientYes (as patient)Can use a qualifying family member's MediSave — the patient does not need to be a Singapore Citizen or PR

At Dentalis, we clarify family account eligibility at the first consultation. Both the patient's and the account holder's NRICs are needed on the day of surgery. The account holder does not need to be present — consent is captured via the Medical Claims Authorisation Form (MCAF) signed before the procedure.

What MediSave Does Not Cover for Wisdom Tooth Treatment

Understanding what falls outside MediSave prevents surprises on the day of surgery. These components are paid in cash — though CHAS and dental insurance may apply to some of them.

Step by Step

How the MediSave Claim Process Works at Dentalis

The claim is handled by the clinic — patients do not need to log into the CPF portal or manage paperwork themselves. Here is the full sequence.

  1. Consultation and OPG X-ray Dr Jonathan Liu conducts a clinical assessment and reviews your OPG panoramic X-ray (S$98 before GST, includes examination and imaging). The X-ray confirms whether your wisdom tooth qualifies as surgical and determines the applicable TOSP table. This is the only accurate way to confirm MediSave eligibility — symptoms or a phone description are not sufficient.
  2. Cost Estimate You receive a cost estimate showing the surgical fee, the TOSP classification, the MediSave withdrawal amount, and any cash top-up required. If you plan to use a family member's MediSave, this is confirmed at this stage. You are not committed to proceeding — the estimate is provided for your decision.
  3. Medical Claims Authorisation Form (MCAF) When you are ready to proceed, you sign the Medical Claims Authorisation Form (MCAF) — the CPF Board document that authorises the MediSave withdrawal. If using a family member's account, the account holder must also sign; they do not need to be present. You can check your MediSave balance in advance via the CPF mobile app or through SingPass. Bring your NRIC (and the account holder's NRIC if using a family member's account) on the day of surgery.
  4. Surgery Wisdom tooth surgery at Dentalis is performed by Dr Jonathan Liu or visiting oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr Albert Lee Ming Hsien (FAMS, SDC D22238J) — confirmed at consultation based on case complexity. Surgery is performed under local anaesthesia — Calaject computer-controlled delivery significantly reduces the discomfort of the injection. The procedure typically takes 30–60 minutes per tooth. Post-operative care plan and medical leave are provided before discharge. For what to expect during recovery, see our wisdom tooth recovery guide.
  5. Electronic Claim Submission The clinic submits the MediSave claim electronically to CPF Board on your behalf on the day of surgery. If the MediSave account has sufficient balance, the deduction is processed within days and the clinic is paid directly. You pay any cash balance (consultation, X-ray, and any surgical shortfall) on the day.

If MediSave balance is insufficient: The clinic will discuss payment arrangements with you at the estimate stage. Some patients use a combination of their own MediSave and a family member's account if their personal balance does not cover the surgical fee in full.

Combining Subsidies

How MediSave and CHAS Work Together

For CHAS cardholders having surgical wisdom tooth removal at a CHAS-accredited, MediSave-accredited clinic like Dentalis, both subsidies can be applied in the same visit. MediSave covers the surgical fee. CHAS reduces the consultation and X-ray costs separately.

Dr Jonathan Liu, principal dentist at Dentalis

"The MediSave table that applies to a patient's case is not something we can tell them over the phone. It requires an X-ray. A Table 1B case and a Table 3A case look identical from outside the mouth — the difference of a thousand dollars is visible only on imaging. That is why the first step is always the assessment, followed by the cost estimate before scheduling the treatment."

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions — Wisdom Tooth MediSave Claims

Only for surgical extraction — not simple removal of a fully erupted tooth. The procedure must involve gum incision, bone removal, or tooth sectioning and be classified under the MOH Table of Surgical Procedures. Singapore Citizens and PRs may use their own or an immediate family member's MediSave account at a MediSave-accredited clinic.

Effective 1 April 2025: Table 1B (1 tooth, bone removal only) = S$720. Table 2C (1 tooth, bone removal + tooth division) = S$1,420. Table 3A (1 tooth, completely buried) = S$1,690. Tables 3B–3C (2–3 teeth) = S$2,040–S$2,220. Tables 4A–4B (4 teeth) = S$2,680–S$2,740. All figures include the S$300 consumables allowance. TOSP table confirmed after OPG X-ray assessment.

Yes — spouse, children, parents, grandparents, or siblings who are Singapore Citizens or PRs. The patient does not need to be a Singapore Citizen or PR — only the account holder does. At Dentalis, both NRICs are needed on the day of surgery. The account holder does not need to be present — consent is captured via the MCAF.

Table 1B: bone removal required, no tooth division — S$720 total MediSave (1 tooth). Table 2C: bone removal plus tooth sectioning — S$1,420 total. Table 3A: completely buried in bone, requires bone removal and sectioning — S$1,690 total. Higher complexity = higher table = greater claimable amount. All three cover one tooth per session.

MediSave does not cover: simple (non-surgical) extraction, consultation fees, OPG or CBCT imaging, antibiotics and pain medication, inhalation sedation, and post-operative review appointments. These are cash-pay; CHAS subsidies may reduce the consultation and X-ray costs for eligible cardholders.

OPG X-ray at consultation confirms TOSP table → written cost estimate provided → MCAF signed (account holder consent required if using family account) → surgery performed → claim submitted electronically to CPF Board by the clinic. You pay the cash balance on the day. Both NRICs needed. Account holder does not need to be present. Check your MediSave balance via SingPass in advance.

Yes — MediSave eligibility is determined by surgical classification, not by pain. A completely buried asymptomatic wisdom tooth may qualify for Table 3A if it requires bone removal and tooth division. A painful but fully erupted tooth removable as a simple extraction does not qualify. Only OPG X-ray and clinical assessment can confirm which applies.
