Understanding Mouth Guards
The Quiet Damage of Grinding
Most people who grind their teeth do not know it.
There is no moment of awareness. No sharp pain that announces itself in the night. What there is, instead, is a slow accumulation. A jaw that aches when you wake. Teeth that are subtly flatter than they once were. Headaches that arrive without obvious cause. The kind of tiredness in the face that is difficult to explain.
Bruxism — the clinical term for teeth grinding and jaw clenching — is one of the most common and most underdiagnosed conditions in dentistry. It happens largely during sleep, which is precisely why it escapes notice until the damage is already done.
A custom mouth guard does not stop the habit. It protects the teeth from its effects. Precisely fitted, made to match your bite, worn while you sleep — it stands between what you do unconsciously and the long-term cost of doing nothing.

When to Seek Assessment
Signs You May Be Grinding
Many patients are told at a routine check-up that their teeth show signs of wear. That is often the first indication. Others notice the following.
Morning jaw stiffness or soreness
Particularly noticeable in the first hour after waking.
Dull headaches around the temples
Pressure-type, recurring, without a clear cause.
Tooth sensitivity that has worsened
To temperature, sweet foods, or biting pressure.
Visible flattening or chipping of teeth
Particularly the back molars — often confirmed on examination.
A partner has heard grinding sounds
During sleep — often the clearest external signal.
Jaw fatigue or persistent facial tightness
Across the jaw or cheeks, through the day.
Worn enamel confirmed on examination
Noticed incidentally during a routine check-up.
Existing restorations under strain
Crowns, veneers, or fillings chipping or fracturing repeatedly.
The Appliance
Custom vs Over-the-Counter
A mouth guard — also called a night guard, occlusal splint, or bruxism guard — is a removable appliance worn over the teeth to absorb the forces of grinding and clenching during sleep.
There is a meaningful difference between a custom-fitted dental guard and the variants available at pharmacies.
Custom mouth guards are made from clinical-grade materials, fitted precisely to your dentition, and designed to distribute force evenly across the arch while maintaining your natural bite. Comfortable enough to wear consistently. Durable enough to last.
Stock and boil-and-bite guards are built for general anatomy. Bulky, difficult to sleep in, and rarely stable enough to offer meaningful long-term protection. Most patients who try them stop wearing them.
A guard that is not worn is not protection. Fit is what determines whether a patient actually uses it.
How a custom guard differs
Calibrated to your bite
Made from digital scans of your teeth — not a general mould.
Clinical-grade materials
Fabricated in a dental laboratory — not pharmacy-grade.
Even force distribution
Spreads grinding load across the arch rather than concentrating it.
Accounts for existing restorations
Crowns, veneers, and bridges are incorporated into the design.
Thin enough to sleep in
A guard worn consistently is what delivers protection.

The materials explained
Hard acrylic
Rigid construction. Greater durability under sustained grinding force. The clinical standard for moderate to heavy grinders. Maintains precise occlusal design over time.
Dual-laminate
Soft inner layer against the teeth, hard outer shell that resists grinding force. Suited to patients who need durability but prefer a less rigid feel.
The recommended material is confirmed at your consultation — not decided in advance.

Step by Step
How a Mouth Guard Is Made at Dentalis
Two appointments are typically all that is required. The guard is made to your exact teeth — not to a general template.
Total time commitment
Consultation and scan: 30–minute. Fitting appointment: 15–20 minutes. Fabrication interval: typically 7–10 working days.
-
Consultation & Assessment — 30 Minutes
Dr Jonathan Liu examines your teeth, bite, and wear patterns. Bruxism activity is confirmed clinically. Guard type, arch placement, and material are recommended based on your specific presentation. A fee estimate is provided before anything is booked.
-
Digital Impressions
Precise digital scans are taken of your teeth. The fit is mapped to your exact dentition, accounting for every existing restoration — not approximated from a standard mould.
-
Laboratory Fabrication
Your guard is constructed in a dental laboratory from clinical-grade materials, calibrated to your bite relationship. Typically ready within 7–10 working days.
-
Fitting & Refinement
The completed guard is seated, checked for fit and bite alignment, and adjusted as needed. You leave wearing it correctly. If refinement is needed after the first night of use, we see you again.
"I see bruxism damage more than I see bruxism treated. Patients come in with crowns fractured, veneers chipped, enamel worn flat — and they often had no idea the grinding was happening. The guard is a simple intervention. The earlier it goes in, the less restoration work we are doing five years later."

Coverage & Subsidies
A Note on MediSave, CHAS, and Insurance
Custom mouth guards for bruxism are not MediSave or CHAS claimable. These schemes apply to specific dental surgical procedures under the MOH Table of Surgical Procedures — oral appliance fabrication is not among them.
Some corporate dental benefit plans and private insurance policies provide partial coverage for custom appliances, depending on the plan tier and insurer. Plans from providers including AIA, Prudential, and Great Eastern may include dental device benefits — we recommend checking your policy directly before your appointment.
We can provide a clinical receipt and itemised documentation for insurance submission. We will always tell you plainly what is and is not covered — before you commit to anything.

Patient Reviews
Smiles That Speak a Thousand Words
Real patients. Honest feedback. At Dentalis, Tanjong Pagar.
“My friends were surprised when they saw me right after my root canal because I looked completely fine with no swelling at all. I found Dr Jonathan Liu because I wanted better quality dental care which would last long, rather than to have to spend more on treatments and procedures over the course of time because they were not originally done well. Its a worthy investment. All the staff there are very friendly and easy to approach as well. Highly recommend!”

Frequently Asked Questions
Common Questions About Mouth Guards in Singapore
Answered clearly and honestly.
At Dentalis, custom night guards are priced from S$450 before prevailing GST. The final fee depends on the guard type recommended at clinical assessment. An estimate is provided at consultation before anything is booked.
The terms are used interchangeably. A night guard is a type of mouth guard designed for overnight wear — protecting teeth from the effects of grinding and clenching during sleep. Sports mouthguards are designed for sudden impact during physical activity. Different materials, different construction, different purpose. Dentalis offers both.
A mouth guard does not stop the grinding habit. It protects the teeth, jaw joints, and surrounding structures from its effects. The forces of bruxism are redirected into the guard rather than absorbed by the teeth and enamel.
Over-the-counter guards offer some degree of separation between the teeth but are not calibrated to your bite. They are often bulky, uncomfortable to sleep in, and rarely stable enough to offer meaningful long-term protection. Most patients who try them stop wearing them. A custom-fitted guard is designed to be worn consistently — which is what makes it effective.
A custom night guard typically lasts two to five years, depending on the severity of grinding and the material. Heavy grinders may wear through a guard sooner. Regular check-ups allow the guard to be monitored and replaced when needed.
This depends on your bite, the pattern of wear, and clinical preference. At Dentalis, the arch placement is determined after assessment — not assumed.
Yes. A custom mouth guard is designed around your existing dental anatomy, including crowns, veneers, and bridges. Protecting existing restorations from grinding forces is, in fact, one of the more important reasons to have a guard fitted. All restorations are accounted for in the design.
Many people are unaware they grind at night. Common indicators include jaw soreness or stiffness in the morning, unexplained headaches, increased tooth sensitivity, visible flattening or chipping of teeth, and wear patterns identified at a routine dental check-up. A clinical assessment will confirm whether protective intervention is warranted.
Custom mouth guards for bruxism are not claimable under MediSave or CHAS. Some corporate dental benefit plans and private insurance policies provide partial coverage for custom appliances — coverage varies by plan and insurer. We can provide itemised documentation for insurance submission. Ask at your appointment.
