The Longevity Framework
A checkup is not routine. It is intelligence.
At Dentalis, a dental checkup is a full oral health assessment — teeth, gums, bite alignment, soft tissues, and a systematic oral cancer screen. Problems caught here are small, manageable, and inexpensive to address. Left unchecked, they become complex, costly, and sometimes irreversible.
Most patients see a dentist when something hurts. By then, an early cavity has become a root canal. Gum inflammation has progressed to bone loss. The window for low-cost, low-intervention care has already closed. A 6-monthly checkup is the single most cost-effective investment you can make in your long-term oral health.

What a dental checkup covers
Every appointment includes a systematic clinical assessment across four areas before any cleaning begins.
01 — Teeth
Tooth health
Decay, wear, fracture, and erosion. Existing restorations assessed for integrity. X-rays where clinically indicated — not at every visit by default.
02 — Gums
Periodontal assessment
Pocket depth, bleeding on probing, bone levels, gum recession. Periodontitis is largely asymptomatic in early stages and is the leading cause of adult tooth loss.
03 — Bite & Jaw
Occlusion and TMJ
Bite alignment and temporomandibular joint function assessed for bruxism, occlusal wear, and jaw strain. Minor misalignment causes progressive damage over years.
04 — Soft Tissue
Oral cancer screening
Systematic visual and tactile screen of lips, cheeks, tongue, floor of mouth, and palate at every appointment. Oral cancer has a markedly higher survival rate when detected early.
In-clinic CBCT 3D imaging and iTero Lumina Pro digital scan are available when necessary — no external referral required.
Step by step
What to Expect at Dentalis
A first visit at Dentalis takes 45 minutes — longer than a routine scale by design. Our dentists conduct the clinical examination, not a hygienist. You leave with a clear picture of your oral health and a treatment plan if any follow-up is needed.
No treatment is carried out at the appointment without your agreement. All costs are disclosed before any work begins.
Why X-rays matter at your checkup
Early interproximal decay, bone loss, and root pathology are invisible to clinical examination alone. If you have not had dental X-rays in the past two to three years, we typically recommend a baseline set — as the clinical standard for a complete oral health assessment. A treatment plan without radiographs is an incomplete one.
Health history review
Medical and dental history updated. Current concerns noted. Dental chart completed or reviewed.
Full clinical examination
Teeth, gums, existing restorations, bite alignment, and TMJ function. Each tooth charted individually.
Oral cancer screening
Systematic visual and tactile examination of lips, cheeks, tongue, floor of mouth, and palate. Performed at every appointment as standard.
X-rays (where necessary)
Bitewing, periapical or OPG radiographs to detect decay and assess bone levels. Not routine at every visit.
iTero Lumina Pro digital scan
3D digital model of your teeth for baseline records (where necessary)
Professional cleaning — SAP or GBT
Your choice if ultrasonic scaling and polishing (SAP) or Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) using the EMS AIRFLOW® 8-step Swiss protocol.
Treatment plan and review interval
Findings explained clearly by your dentist. Recommended recall interval confirmed before you leave.
“We spend hundreds of dollars a month on skincare and supplements. Yet the dental checkup — the appointment that monitors bone levels, gum health, and early oral cancer — is often the last on the list. Broken down, twice-yearly care at Dentalis works out to around S$25 a month. A fraction of what a single tooth costs to restore once the chance to save it has passed.”

Dental Cleaning Options
GBT or Ultrasonic Scaling & Polishing
Dentalis offers two professional cleaning methods. Both achieve thorough debridement — the choice depends on your preference. Not sure which suits you? Ask our dentist at your first appointment. A professional clean is also typically recommended before any teeth whitening treatment.
Option A
Ultrasonic Scaling & Polishing (SAP)
Subsequent visits from S$120 before GST
Removes calculus from tooth surfaces and below the gumline. Rubber cup and polishing paste remove surface stains. Effective and efficient — suitable for most patients on routine six-monthly care.
- ✓Ultrasonic scaler for calculus removal
- ✓Polishing paste for surface stain removal
- ✓Routine six-monthly maintenance
Option B
Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)
Subsequent visits from S$200 before GST
The EMS AIRFLOW® Prophylaxis Master follows an 8-step Swiss protocol. Erythritol powder at low pressure removes biofilm gently — less contact on sensitive gum tissue and enamel surfaces. Preferred for peri-implant maintenance.
- ✓8-step EMS AIRFLOW® GBT protocol
- ✓Gentler on sensitive gums and enamel
- ✓Braces, peri-implant and heavy staining cases

"Twice a year, for the cost of around S$25 a month, you can know with certainty the state of your teeth and gums. Most of what I treat daily — root canals, bone loss, fillings on advanced decay — could have been identified and addressed simply at a routine appointment two years earlier. The checkup is not maintenance. It is the most important appointment on your dental calendar."

Common Questions
Dental checkup FAQs
Dr Jonathan Liu recommends a dental checkup and professional clean every six months for most patients. Those with active gum disease, a history of rapid decay, or ongoing orthodontic treatment may benefit from visits every three to four months. The appropriate interval is assessed at your first appointment and updated as your oral health evolves.
Standard scaling and polishing (SAP) uses an ultrasonic scaler and rubber cup to remove tartar and surface stains. Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) follows an 8-step EMS AIRFLOW® protocol, using erythritol powder at low pressure to remove biofilm more gently — with less contact on sensitive gum tissue and tooth surfaces. GBT is well-suited for sensitivity, heavy staining, or patients with dental implants.
Yes. Dentalis is an enrolled CHAS clinic. CHAS subsidies cover consultation (up to S$30.50 for Pioneer Generation), scaling (up to S$40), polishing (up to S$30.50), X-rays (up to S$21 per film, up to six per year), and fluoride application — depending on your card tier. Dental checkup and cleaning are not MediSave claimable. Bring your CHAS, Merdeka Generation, or Pioneer Generation card to your appointment — subsidies are applied at payment.
Most dental insurance policies include preventive care — routine checkups, scaling, and polishing — as a covered benefit, often at 100% with no co-payment.
Most patients find professional cleaning comfortable without anaesthetic. For patients with dental sensitivity or anxiety, Dentalis offers Calaject® computer-controlled anaesthetic delivery on request (S$50 before GST) for any cleaning appointment. Calaject uses pressure-regulated slow injection designed to significantly reduce injection discomfort. Let us know when you book and we will note it for your visit.
Dr Jonathan Liu and dental associates will explain any findings at the appointment — the nature of the issue, options available, and likely costs. A written treatment plan is provided before any work proceeds. Nothing is carried out without your informed agreement. Minor decay is typically managed with a tooth filling. For conditions requiring a specialist — complex wisdom tooth surgery near nerves, implant placement, oral surgery — Dr Albert Lee Ming Hsien (F.A.M.S., Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon) is available at Dentalis without an external referral.
