Dental Crown

Some teeth deserve a second chapter. A well-fitted crown — placed with care, shaped to the bite — restores what was compromised without announcing itself.

Restorative Dentistry

The Finish That Holds

Most dental work has a natural endpoint — a point where the treatment resolves and the tooth settles back into the background of daily life. A dental crown is often that endpoint.

It follows the root canal treatment that saved the tooth. It covers the crack that was deepening with each chew. It restores the molar worn down by years of heavy filling. In each case, what was once compromised becomes, quietly, functional again.

At Dentalis, we work with zirconia — a material chosen for its durability, its close match to natural tooth colour, and its ability to hold up under the pressures a back tooth encounters daily. The result is a restoration that sits correctly in the bite, feels natural in the mouth, and does not draw attention to itself.

That, in the end, is the point.

Clinical Indications

When a Dental Crown Is the Right Step

A dental crown is not always the first option — but it is often the most considered one. It protects what remains of a tooth that has been structurally compromised, and restores function where a filling alone would not hold.

After root canal treatment

A tooth that has undergone RCT is hollowed and more brittle. A crown protects it from fracture under biting pressure.

A cracked or fractured tooth

Where the crack extends below the gumline or a cusp has broken, a crown holds the remaining structure together.

A large or failing filling

When more tooth has been filled than remains, or when an old filling is breaking down, a crown is the more stable long-term solution.

Significant tooth wear

Teeth worn by grinding or acid erosion may need a crown to restore height, function, and contact with opposing teeth.

Bruxism

Where grinding is the cause, a custom night guard for bruxism may be warranted alongside or before crown placement — to protect the new restoration from the same forces that damaged the original tooth.

On a dental implant

The crown is the visible, functional component placed on top of an implant — the part that looks and acts like a tooth.

An existing crown that has failed

Older crowns — particularly porcelain-fused-to-metal — may need replacement as the margins fail or the underlying tooth changes.

The Dentalis Choice

Why Zirconia

Not all crowns are made the same way. The material matters — for durability, for how the crown sits against the opposing teeth over time, and for how it looks alongside the surrounding teeth.

At Dentalis, we use zirconia crowns. Zirconia is a ceramic material that combines the strength required for molar function with a translucency that sits naturally beside the surrounding teeth. It carries no metal substructure, which means there is no dark line at the gumline as the margin ages.

In our assessment, it is the most appropriate material for the range of cases we treat — whether the crown is going on a posterior molar that needs to bear load, or an anterior tooth where appearance is as important as function.

We do not offer same-day or CEREC crowns at Dentalis at the moment. Our crowns are laboratory-fabricated — a process that, in our view, produces a more precise fit and a better long-term result.

Step by Step

What to Expect at Dentalis

We begin with a conversation. Before any preparation is scheduled, we review the tooth in question, discuss your options, and explain what is involved — including the fee breakdown, in writing, before anything is confirmed.

Calaject anaesthesia is used throughout the preparation appointment: a computer-controlled delivery system that eliminates the discomfort of the injection itself, not just what follows.

  1. Consultation & Assessment

We review the tooth in question, your dental history, and any existing imaging. Where needed, we take an OPG X-ray and iTero digital scan to assess the tooth, surrounding bone, and bite. We discuss your options and, if a crown is the right path, explain exactly what is involved before anything is scheduled.

  2. Tooth Preparation

The tooth is shaped to receive the crown — a process that removes a precise amount of enamel from all surfaces. Calaject anaesthesia is used throughout: a computer-controlled system that eliminates the discomfort of the injection itself.

  3. Digital Scan

An iTero digital impression is taken — no physical trays, no impression material. A precise digital record of your teeth and bite is sent directly to the laboratory for fabrication.

  4. Crown Fabrication

Your zirconia crown is fabricated by a dental laboratory from the digital scan. This process takes approximately two weeks.

  5. Fitting & Cementation

The crown is checked for fit, margin seal, and bite before permanent cementation. Adjustments are made at the chair until the result is correct.

Dr Jonathan Liu, Principal Dentist and Founder at Dentalis Singapore

"A crown, fitted well, should be transparent — invisible in daily use, indistinguishable from the natural teeth around it. Our goal is a restoration that holds correctly in the bite, bears load without complaint, and does not announce itself. That is the standard we hold each case to."
