Is a Night Guard Covered by MediSave or Insurance?
MediSave
Night guards and custom mouth guards for bruxism are not claimable under MediSave. MediSave applies only to approved dental surgical procedures listed in the MOH Table of Surgical Procedures (TOSP). A preventive protective appliance is not a surgical procedure and is explicitly excluded.
Some clinics indicate that MediSave or CHAS may apply to night guards — this is factually incorrect. Do not factor MediSave into your budgeting for a custom guard.
CHAS
CHAS dental subsidies apply to specific restorative and preventive treatments at registered clinics. Custom mouth guard fabrication is not a subsidised treatment under current CHAS dental schedules.

A sports mouthguard and a night guard are fundamentally different appliances. Patients sometimes ask whether one can substitute for the other — it cannot.
A night guard is designed to protect tooth surfaces from the sustained, repetitive force of grinding during sleep. It is made from harder materials — typically rigid acrylic — calibrated to the bite and designed for consistent nightly wear. Thin enough to sleep in. Precise enough to distribute occlusal load evenly.
A sports mouthguard is designed for sudden impact protection during physical activity. It is made from softer, shock-absorbing material — typically EVA — thicker in construction, and covers the gum margins as well as the teeth. It is not calibrated to grinding patterns and wearing one overnight would not provide meaningful bruxism protection.
