Wisdom Tooth Extraction in Singapore 2025:

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

It’s easy to overlook wisdom teeth that appear painless and out of the way. However, even asymptomatic molars can cause significant issues for your teeth and gums if left untreated.

What are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are our permanent third molars, typically erupting between the ages of 18 and 22. While most adults have 32 permanent teeth, the jaw often lacks sufficient space for these final molars to fully emerge.

Why is Wisdom Tooth Extraction Recommended?

For many people, wisdom teeth are blocked from erupting completely by the second molars or the surrounding bone and gums. These are known as impacted wisdom teeth. An impacted wisdom tooth may partially emerge, showing only a small part of the crown, or it may never emerge at all. The tooth can also grow at an angle towards or away from the adjacent molar, or even grow horizontally.

If you suspect you have an impacted wisdom tooth, a consultation with a dentist is the first step to determine the best course of action.

Do I Need Wisdom Tooth Removal Surgery?

You may need to consider wisdom tooth removal surgery if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Wisdom Tooth Pain

  • Swollen gums

  • Swelling around the jaw

  • Persistent bad breath

  • An unpleasant taste in your mouth

What are the Complications of Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

An impacted wisdom tooth is sometimes painless, so you may not even know you have one. However, if left in the jaw, it could lead to several problems. Due to their position, partially impacted wisdom teeth are often difficult to clean. Food and bacteria easily become trapped between the tooth and the overlying gums, creating an ideal breeding ground for cavities and painful gum diseases to develop.

Excessive bacteria accumulation can lead to an infection, manifesting as pain and swelling in the area. If a wisdom tooth grows at an angle towards the second molar, the point where it contacts the second molar is often a starting point for tooth decay. This often goes unnoticed as it happens below the gumline, leading to extensive tooth decay developing on the adjacent, healthy second molar. This can result in more costly procedures being required (for example a root canal treatment) or, in some cases, the loss of your permanent second molar.

In rare cases, a sac can form around the tooth within the jawbone, filling with fluid to create a cyst. This cyst can damage the jawbone, nerves, and surrounding teeth. These conditions can develop slowly and without warning, causing significant distress and requiring more extensive treatment if not caught early.

What Happens During a Wisdom Tooth Consultation at Dentalis?

During your initial visit, a dentist at Dentalis will perform a comprehensive dental examination and take X-rays to assess the alignment and condition of your wisdom teeth. Based on the findings, the dentist will recommend an appropriate treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

Is Wisdom Tooth Removal Surgery Always Necessary?

Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed. If your wisdom teeth are fully functional and you can brush and floss them properly, removal is often unnecessary. Regular checkups and dental cleaning at Dentalis allow us to monitor your wisdom teeth and recommend preventive treatments if needed.

If you are experiencing pain or swelling, or suspect you have an impacted wisdom tooth, we recommend scheduling an appointment to consult with a Dentalis dentist about your treatment options.

How can I get a pain-free Wisdom Tooth Removal Surgery?

We understand that some patients may feel anxious and nervous about dental procedures. Wisdom tooth surgeries are typically performed under local anesthesia, which completely numbs the area so you feel no pain during the procedure. For patients with high anxiety or a low pain tolerance, we offer the option of intra-venous (IV) sedation. Administered by a qualified anesthetist, IV sedation helps you relax or sleep comfortably throughout the entire procedure, ensuring a stress-free and painless experience.

Can I Use Medisave or CHAS for Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

At Dentalis, we understand the importance of affordable dental care. The cost of wisdom tooth treatment varies depending on the procedure. After an initial consultation and X-rays, our dentist can determine if your wisdom tooth removal procedure is eligible for Medisave and CHAS subsidies. If a wisdom tooth removal surgery is required, you can use your Medisave to pay up to $950 per wisdom tooth.
